Jeff heads to the log racks to pick up the first of the two second floor girder logs. |
Jeff gets as close as he can... |
...then extends the boom out for the rest of the reach. |
Bob and Paul secure a chain sling. |
Because the log is too far out of reach for a 2-point pick, Jeff pulls the log out first. |
Pulling the log out and resting one end on another rack. |
Now the log can be picked and carried. |
Carrying the girder log to the house. |
Adjusting the chains to a single lifting point just offset from the balance point so we can pivot the log in the air. |
Lifting the log up onto the wall, small end first. |
Paul sits on the wall and spots the log progression over the near wall. |
Bob tells Jeff to swing to the right a bit while Paul directs the small end inside the house with a tag line. |
The boom reaches just high enough to guide the log over the wall. |
Starting the traverse across to the other wall. |
Paul has hooked up the block and tackle from the opposite lifting poles to guide the small end up onto the opposite wall. The log is now resting on both walls. |
Bob loosens the choker chain and slides it out so Jeff can pick up this end and move the log in farther. |
Bob unhooks the chain and gives a wave to Jeff. |
A look at the small end of the girder from the outside of the opposite wall. |
The first girder is up. We're now ready to lift the second one. |
The second girder is also going up small end first, but from the opposite side. There is an explanation for alternating the orientation of the two girders, but it's a long one. |
Paul watches as Jeff begins to lift the butt end. |
Almost leveled out. |
With the butt end raised and the small end picked up with block and tackle, the journey across to the opposite wall begins. |
The second girder is now resting across both walls. |

Looking up from the basement floor. |

Once we rolled the girder to the orientation we wanted it, we used a come-along to slide it sideways without rolling it. Here, Paul is using a large pry bar to help nudge it along. |
Paul and Jillena use a plumb bob to determine the exact position for this end of the girder. It must be offset from the 1st floor girder beneath it by a certain amount. There's another long explanation for this, too. |
Jillena measures the distance from the first floor girder post to the plumb bob string. |
We've got it strapped into position for now. |
