With the window installation project coming to a close today, Jeff started a new one. In an attempt to use every part of the logs we've had milled into lumber, we decided to cut 1/2" boards from the outer part of the log to use as siding material for the gable walls. Jeff set the first row and started on the second by day's end.

Jeff put up a few more rows of the gable siding today. It's quite tricky getting the ceiling angle cuts just right on the end pieces, while still maintaining a visual level appearance to the wavy bottom edge of the boards. Using a set angle just doesn't work like we hoped. Each board averages 6" in total width, yielding anywhere from a 2" to 4" reveal.

Six rows complete. These boards vary in length and are held up with finish nails directly into the gable studs.

Jeff put up a few more rows of siding tonight after work. He's about half-way up now.

The siding is about as high as it can go for now. Jeff is out of reach working off the 2nd scaffold deck. We also need to make another trip to the mill for more material.

Bob gets full credit for this wonderful idea. The crowns that get sliced off the logs at the mill aren't going to waste. They're being used as "crown" moulding to trim the area where the ceiling meets the log wall. For manageability, Jeff cut them to 5' lengths or less. While Jeff worked on this, Lee and Jillena were in the basement putting up more radiant heat insulation.

Jeff finished the crown moulding today, except for the two north end pieces that will go up after the north gable wall siding is installed.
